While speaking about the story of Avan Ivan , director bala said that "Normally my films will have comedy scenes but in this film there will more comedy scenes. This film is family oriented but at the same time there will lot of actions also. New face Janani Iyer is the heroine of this film.It is true that we considered Sarathkumar’s daughter Varalakshmi for the second heroine role. But when we did some changes in the story, there was significance in the role of Janani. Hence we did not select Varalakshmi. "

Vaanam movie story revolves around 5 different plots :-

1. Hero Simbu coming from a poor family working as a cable operator loves one girl , where the girl friend tells him to become rich within a stipulated date. to be successful on this ,hero simbu tries to earn more money but unfortunatley he becomes unsuccessful. Then the hero decided another path and becomes a chain snatcher in which he was caught by police and meets Anushka in the Jail.

2. Heroine Anushka Shetty is being roled as Prostitute and she escapes from a little town to chennai to set up her own brother house.
3. Bharath a rocking star with his girl friend (Vega), as his musical group plans to travel chennai for making as big as in musical happening band.
4. Prakash Raj a muslim guy who is always found in the list of bad pages of Police department that make his wife (Sonia Agarwal ) life in trouble .
Finally
5. Saranya a desolated widow travels to chennai for selling her kid to return the money which she borrowed from the lender , so as to get back her son who is held as a slave.
